Sorry, what was the question again?

Another in our venerable series where a customer asks one of us a question that requires some serious research, this one is about what file systems have what features, not just among the various Linux-focused flavors, but between Linux, Windows and Solaris in this particular instance.

Yes, but does it come in blue?

One of the sources I look to for comparisons is Wikipedia, which sports a tremendous set of pages that people have constructed that show comparisons of just about anything you would want. The main page that I refer to when I am looking up File Systems is the Comparison of File Systems.

A Quick Tour

The comparison doesn’t just list the various file systems and a few details, it’s got a number of sections for your further edification:

  • General information
  • Limits
  • Metadata
  • Features
  • Allocation and layout policies

I also was fascinated by some of the items included in the Notes section, lots of good context for the tables and some great historical information for those of us who really think that a good file system is built to be understood.

Lots more of this sort of thing coming, any requests?

Enjoy,

RossB
