Job Description:

As a Systems Engineer, you’re a full-time Linux tinkerer. You play around with our system, find areas that could use upgrade or improvement, and then make it happen. You identify issues before they become problems for our customers, and you help us find ways to work around those problems to create a more stable and secure hosted platform. You’ll explore and troubleshoot OS level, web server, database server, applications server, DNS, SMTP, and other software issues. You’re involved in the technical aspects of problem identification, systems architecture design, hardware/software specification and design, and implementation. Plus, you understand how to manage disk I/O and memory usage and how to evaluate and implement hot fixes or patches.

Your responsibilities to the customers include:

-Identifying and correcting problems, both current and potential, and then making them disappear so as to create the best customer experience possible
-Being mindful of security implications at both an application and network level in order to protect the data of our customers
-Providing basic user administration (add/delete user, change passwords, group administration)
-Using your keen judgment to make decisions that will ensure maximum uptime of our system
-Your responsibilities to your coworkers (the people pounding on your door) include:
-Keeping yourself educated and up to date on current technologies and new versions of existing software solutions
-Having ownership over at least one subsystem or component with a high degree of accountability
-Controlling call flow for the support team
-Assisting in mentoring lower-level engineers
-Important skills and characteristics:
-2-3 years working in a computer technical field with customer service experience is a must; a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent work experience is preferred.
-Linux experience is a requirement.

They want a Linux Guru!  They have 600-700 Linux servers and 40-50 clusters.  Their goal is to have one Linux Engineer per cluster!

Day to Day:
-Setting up servers
-Working with the development teams (because all the new development is done in the Blacksburg facility and each development team has a dedicated engineer that makes sure the development is scalable across the systems.)
-Security Assessments
-Configure SQL Server 2005 on databases
-Help performance issues
-Escalation of deeper issues
-Performance Tuning
-Proactive problem solving, 20% of time

This team is doing all Research & Development for the company!  These guys will be architecting the systems here and trying to solve problems that nobody else is trying. They are managing and monitoring 100 million email tracking logs per day and manage exchange for hundreds of thousands of users. They are looking for people who: -have worked in very large enterprise environments. (not 20 or even 200 users, but more like 1000s) -someone who has an overall knowledge base, but has specialized in a certain area for the past few years. (ex. Someone who has been in charge)

Details

  • 60 percent linux engineering. 40% support
  • Build, scale, troubleshoot service platform.
  • Manage datacenter
  • Fine-tune and enhance our web service
  • Write tools that will allow our service to scale by automating routine production workflows
  • Monitor production systems using open-source tools.
  • Scripting skills
  • Configuration management, monitoring/alerting, application deployment,
  • Server deployment, systems automation.
  • Ability to work at all levels of the platform (datacenter/network/servers/application).
  • Web application architectures and the role of systems engineering insupporting and enhancing them such as SOA/SaaS.
  • cfengine, nagios, cacti, kickstart/netboot etc
  • Some knowledge of CentOS, Java, Tomcat, Oracle, and MySQL.
  • Experience with networking (BGP/OSPF).
  • Juniper or Foundry  a plus
  • Good skills with (PHP/Perl/Python)
